Bengisu Rona (b. Ankara) studied English Language and Literature at the University of Istanbul. She took a PhD in linguistics at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London on the phonetic and phonological structure of Turkish. After teaching for ten years at Boğaziçi University she joined the staff of SOAS, leading Turkish Studies there until her recent retirement. Her specialist fields are Turkish language and 19th and 20th century Turkish literature. Her translation work includes poems by Tevfik Fikret and Nazım Hikmet and prose works of Orhan Kemal, Sabahattin Ali and Sait Faik Abasıyanık.
