Gonca Özmen was born in 1982 and graduated from the Department of English Language and Literature, Istanbul University in 2004. Her first poem was published when she was fifteen years old, and the same year she was judged “a poet worth paying attention to” by the Yaşar Nabi Nayır Youth Award committee. In 1999, she was awarded the Ali Rιza Ertan Poetry Prize. Her first book of poetry Kuytumda, published in 2000, won the Orhon Murat Arıburnu Poetry Prize, and in 2003 she received the Berna Moran Poetry Prize. Her second book Belki Sessiz was published in 2008. She helped to initiate Ç.N., a magazine of literary translation, and she edits the monthly literary journal Palto. Her poems have been translated into English, Farsi, French, German, Slovenian and Spanish. A selection of her poems translated into English by George Messo, The Sea Within (Shearsman Books), was published in 2011.
